NaPoWriMo 2023: The end and the beginning

It’s the end of NaPoWriMo, but it’s also just the beginning as you begin to develop, polish and share the poems you’ve written during April. This podcast features some of the poems contributors to this year’s podcasts have already shared. There are poems by Will Ingrams, Java, Brent Hagen, Haley Nguyen, Scott Gooch and Patrick Widdess.
Please send up to three poems you’ve written during NaPoWriMo including the prompts that inspired them here for inclusion in a future podcast. If possible please send a recording of yourself reading your poems as well the text. Deadline is May 31.

NaPoWriMo Day 27: Java – Tiny creatures

Think small for today’s poem with Java making a welcome return to the NaPoWriMo podcast.

From mice to amoebas the lives of the smaller creatures we share our world with offer different perspectives with a wealth of poetic possibilities. Here’s Java’s poem.

Bug Business

Corporate takeovers can be unpleasant
Tiny warfare
With chemicals and claws present
For all to see
And mandible fangs
In the fight for small supremacy

Flying far above
Bees buzz
Optimised for aerial combat
Formations, teamwork
A well knit unit
Pollination
In formation
Gathering nectar
Refined by chemists formulation
Expected by humans
Inspecting their sweet sensation

And far underfoot
And above in rafters
Spiders lurk in shadow
Fastidious weavers
Heaven help those unbelievers
Who wander blindly in their domain
No pain
Is felt upon their bite
Just a prick
So slight
As skillful as a doctor
Then goodnight

It’s business as usual
Visited upon
By bugs who crawl
We tut and squish
But when we curl our toes and die
Spare a thought for the fly
An undertaker
Just trying to get by
Creeping along our tightening skin
To lay their progeny within

Napowrimo Day Six: Java – Paint

Today ‘warrior poet’ Java offers a simple prompt to get your poem started as we near the end of the first week of NaPoWriMo.

Paint

Use the word paint any way you want. Think of its colours, texture and all the pictures you can paint with it from landscapes, portraits, abstract, and surrealist imagery. You’re sure to find inspiration to fill today’s blank canvas.

Blank Canvas

Another hour, another layer
Of gesso on brush
Deep beneath, somewhere
A flower, so lush

Like and unlike every other
Petals of red
Growing by the road
Fragile, some dead

But this cannot be seen
Underneath the layers
Of base paint
No green
Hues of leaves
Amid a backdrop of grass and trees

No autumn sky
When days were stretched
The sun would die
And wretched man would try
To prolong the light
Maintain his plight
For one more second
He would fight
With all his breath and soul

Instead, with brush in hand
Painting white across the land
While light fades, slowly dimming
A blank canvas
Hoping for some new beginning.
