Norfolk Poets: Jenny Danes

This week’s Norfolk poet is a new discovery, Jenny Danes reading three terrific poems with some adult content.

Jenny Danes is a poet, writer and workshop facilitator from Essex. She studied at Newcastle University and now lives in Norwich. Her work has been published widely in journals such as Poetry Wales, The Rialto, Magma, Under the Radar, Butcher’s Dog and bath magg. In 2016 she won the Poetry Business New Poets Prize, and her debut pamphlet ‘Gaps’ was published by smith|doorstop in 2017. She runs poetry workshops both on Zoom and in person, and she recently completed a Creative Writing MA at UEA. Though she’s most often thinking about poetry, Jenny is also into cooking, running, life drawing, and trying to keep her houseplants alive.

Norfolk Poets: Anti Social Worker

The Anti Social Worker AKA Paul Wellings shares a poem ahead of an upcoming interview in which he talks about his extraordinary life and career as a poet, journalist, musician, DJ, freedom fighter and more. Having started out in London’s East End he now lives on the Norfolk coast, where he’s making a name for himself on the local spoken word scene and further afield with his latest album ‘Militant Business and Grime Poetry’ which has been played on Radio1, OneXtra and 6Music.

Norfolk Poets: Cathleen Davies

The next poet in this series showcasing Norfolk talent is the prolific Cathleen Davies who has already published two books and has a third coming out next year. Cathleen is a very versatile writer and you never know quite what they’re going to come up with next. In these three poems we hear about the pandemic, politics, the Mars rover, David Bowie and love. 

Cathleen Davies is a writer, teacher, editor, and researcher currently completing their Creative / Critical PhD at the University of East Anglia. Their debut collection of short stories Cheeky, Bloody Articles was published by 4Horsemen Publications in August ’22, and their memoir And Marvel was released in 2023. Their upcoming collection Fluid will be released 2024. Davies currently lives in Norwich with their flatmate, and their nineteen-year-old cat Fliss. In their spare time, they haunt gritty venues, drink too much beer, and enjoy their local music scene.

Enjoy a surreal dose of poetry and spoken word from Brandon Webb in the second in the Norfolk poets series.

Brandon is a writer, performance poet and comedian from Great Yarmouth, now based in Norwich. After studying Theatre at York St John University, he has gone on to gain writing credits for Radio Norfolk’s BBC New Comedy Show and Radio 4’s Newsjack. Combining satire, surrealism and social commentary, Brandon’s poetry delves deeply into subjects such as capitalism, cheeseburgers and lost cats…

Norfolk Poets: Rhian Brooke

In the first of a new series Rhian Brooke shares a couple of poems. These short podcasts aim to showcase the many varied and talented poets on the Norfolk scene and Rhian is a poet and performer who is making waves in Norfolk and beyond.

Rhian Brooke is a performance poet from Norwich. She is a regular on the London spoken word scene. She has headlined, featured and hosted many poetry events including Mind Over Matter, Bring Your Own Bars and Groove Verse. Her poetry is eclectic, mixing funny intricate wordplay with a quirky performance style. She tackles a range of hard hitting subjects from social injustice, racism and misogyny to mental health, anxiety and relationships but sprinkles humour throughout. Rhian has had a number of poems published in various anthologies and has recently released her debut spoken word album ‘We Met On The Stairs Of A Bungalow’ on vinyl from which multiple tracks have been played on BBC Radio.
